Postal worker pleads guilty to stealing gift cards

A Scottsdale postal worker has pleaded guilty to stealing gift cards from letters on his route and using them to purchase items for himself.

Richard Allen Jones, 44, pleaded guilty Wednesday to theft of mail by a postal employee.

U.S. District Judge Mary H. Murguia is scheduled to sentence Jones in April.

The Cave Creek man faces up to five years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine.

Authorities allege Jones took the gift cards between July 2007 and March 2008 while serving as a carrier for the Kachina Station, 7339 E. Williams Drive.

The indictment alleges that while serving as a carrier he would sort the mail and steal letters containing the cards.

During a search of his home, agents with the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General found more than 100 suspected stolen gift cards and other pieces of mail.
